When you spend tons of time growing your email list, Instagram following, or YouTube subscriber count, it can be pretty heart-breaking when people hit ‘unfollow’ or ‘unsubscribe’. 💔
I get it. People do it to me every day.
The thing is… it’s actually *wonderful*.
Let me explain.
Since you’re investing energy to create something amazing for people… isn’t better to broadcast only to those who want to hear what you have to say?
People who share your values? Who want to learn what you’re teaching? Who might just become your biggest fans?
An ‘unfollow’ or ‘unsubscribe’ isn’t a rejection.
It’s a disqualification.
These folks are disqualifying themselves. They’re saying, “hey, this isn’t for me right now”. And they’re doing you a favour. 🙌
Think about this in dating terms.
If you go on a first date with someone and they never call you again, you could see that as a rejection (we’ve all been there). Or you could see it as a disqualification.
I mean, do you really want to go out with someone who doesn’t see your value? Who doesn’t want to take things further? Who’s not interested in dating you?
Their decision says more about them than it does about you.
It’s not personal. It’s just not the right fit. So they’ve disqualified themselves as a potential partner.
The same is true in business.
If you’re getting ‘unfollows’ and ‘unsubscribes’, it means you STAND FOR SOMETHING.
It means you’re actively turning off the people who aren’t the right fit for you and your offers.
So the next time you notice someone’s unfollowed you on social media or unsubscribed from your newsletter, silently send them thanks.
Send them a little love, and move on.
They’re creating more space for the right people to find you. 😉
